Last updated on Monday, February 20, 2017

(BLOOMINGTON) - An Indiana University student was arrested on Friday after police say he took a female friend to his apartment and raped her.

Bloomington Police arrested 21-year-old James McGovern on felony charges of rape and criminal confinement.

According to police, the 21-year-old victim told police she had met McGovern at a downtown bar Tuesday night. After talking for a while they then went back to McGovern's apartment in the 600 block of North College Avenue.

The victim claims once there McGovern led her into the bedroom and began to aggressively kiss her, which made her uncomfortable. The victim alleges McGovern then pushed her onto the bed and raped her. Police say that during the rape the victim told McGovern several times to stop.

The victim told police that McGovern said it would be alright and that he wouldn't tell anyone.

Police say when the incident was over McGovern took the woman to his front door and pushed her outside.

The women then contacted a friend who took her to IU Health Bloomington Hospital, where a rape kit was performed. Medical personnel noted the woman also suffered numerous bruises during the attack.

Police met with McGovern at his apartment on Friday and then took him to the police station where he refused to cooperate or answer any questions.

McGovern was arrested and taken to the Monroe County Correctional Center at 5:41 p.m. He is currently being held without bond.
