(VINCENNES) - Ten area high schools will compete in the 2017 Regional Science Olympiad on February 18 at Vincennes University.
The Opening Ceremony begins at 8:30 a.m. (EST) in the Red Skelton Performing Arts Center with the Closing Ceremony schedule there at approximately 3:45 p.m.
High schools competing include Avon, Castle, Evansville North, Fischers, Mitchell, New Albany/Floyd County, Salem, Terre Haute South, West Washington, and Vincennes Rivet.
"Vincennes University has a long track record of support for the ScienceOlympiad, which includes some excellent scholarship opportunities. The competition provides students with an opportunity to connect their interests with the exceptional value that VU offers in STEM-related higher education," said Dr. Paul J. Wilder, dean of the VU College of Science and Mathematics.
Students will compete in 23 events that will test their knowledge of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers, and technology. This marks the 25th year VU has hosted the Science Olympiad Regional Competition.
Members of winning teams in each event will receive medals. Top-finishing teams will receive trophies and may advance to the State Science Olympiad on March 18 at Indiana University Bloomington.
In addition to the awards, the VU Foundation will sponsor the Helicopter event and the top-place junior and senior competitors who choose to major in math or science at VU will received a $2,000 scholarship for first place, $1,700 scholarship for second place, and $1,300 scholarship for third place.
The Helicopter contest requires students to build to specification a rubber band-powered helicopter prior to the event and then fly it for the longest time.
