Cause Of House Fire On R Street Listed As Undetermined

Last updated on Monday, February 6, 2017

(BEDFORD) - Bedford Fire Department investigators have listed the fire that destroyed a home on R Street on Friday as undetermined.

Bedford Fire Department firefighters were alerted to the blaze around 8 a.m. at 306 R Street.

"There was so much damage we just can't determine the exact cause," says Bedford Fire Department Chief Jon Wagner. "So because we can not be 100 percent sure on the exact cause, the cause will be listed as undetermined. The family did have some electrical issues with an air conditioner in a upstairs bedroom before the blaze started."

Firefighters were on the scene for more than five hours battling the blaze.

The occupants, Randy and Kaye Kelley, were sleeping in a downstairs bedroom when the fire started and were able to escape after they were alerted to the blaze by their granddaughter Destinee Andis.

Another occupant, 23-year-old Tyson Andis, was upstairs but was able to escape by jumping from a second-floor window and suffered a leg injury.

The Kelleys live in the home with five grandchildren, who had left from school before the fire started.

"There were multiple layers of roofing on the home, making it difficult to put the fire out," says Chief Wagner. "There were two to three layers of shingles and then a metal roof on top of those. It was a real nightmare to get to the fire and put it out."

The home suffered extensive damage.

"I hate it," Chief added. "I feel sorry for the family... it couldn't be worse. The family did have insurance."
