(BEDFORD) - A Bedford North Lawrence student was arrested Wednesday after he made threats to harm others at the high school.
Lawrence County police responded to a threat at 1:39 p.m. after the school resource officer was told by the school assistant principal that numerous students had learned about the threats to harm others at the school and overheard the student talking about shooting people.
Detectives immediately responded to the school and interviewed numerous witnesses. Lawrence County police went to the home of 14-year-old Evan Brown and received consent to search the boy's room.
"Detectives found items indicating a plan to cause harm at Bedford North Lawrence High School and items to be used to carry out that plan," says Sheriff Mike Branham.
Brown was arrested on a Level 6 felony charge of intimidation. He was taken to the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department where he was interviewed and then transported to the Jackson County Juvenile Detention Center.
Sheriff Branham says that the investigation continued throughout the night and the next day. As the case continues to be investigated, additional charges could be forthcoming.
"I would like to take this opportunity to recognize and give credit to the students who showed true courage by coming forward with the initial information in this investigation as well as the excellent communication between the staff at North Lawrence Community Schools and the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office," Sheriff Branham says. "For those reasons and the hard work of everyone involved this situation came to a safe resolution."
Parents of Bedford North Lawrence High School students were notified Wednesday evening in a text broadcast message about the incident at the high school.
Principal Dan Dyke, in broadcasting the message, characterized the incident as one that "pertained to student safety." He did not release specifics about the incident in the message to parent.
The message reads, "Because of the serious nature of the comments, school administration immediately took action."
Dyke further stated that school personnel immediately contacted law enforcement officers and they immediately assisted school personnel with the investigation.
Dyke stated as a result of the investigation, the situation was resolved and "the potential threat has been stopped."
Dyke's message commended officers with the Lawrence County Police Department for their rapid response and for their assistance in helping school administrators maintain student safety.
