Bloomington Mayor Considering Adding Nearly 10,000 Acres To City Limits

Last updated on Tuesday, February 7, 2017

(BLOOMINGTON) - Bloomington Mayor John Hamilton is asking the city council Wednesday to consider adding nearly 10,000 acres to city limits, a move that would increase the city’s population to about 100,000.

Seven areas have been proposed to be part of the official bounds of the city at total of 9,848 acres. These areas expand as far south as the intersection of Rogers and Walnut streets; as far west as the block of West Gifford Road, S.R. 48 and South Park Square Drive; as far north as the intersection of S.R. 37 and North S.R. 37 Business; and as far east as Heritage Woods Road.

This would add about 15,000 more people to the city population and bring the total population of Bloomington to 100,000. This would make Bloomington the fifth largest city in Indiana, according to the most recent Census data.

The City anticipates that the annexation process will result in enhanced services from the fire and police departments and improvements in street maintenance, transit expansion, proposed high speed fiber to the premises, and programs such as park services. Another factor is the ongoing construction of I-69. The annexation would give the city control of the corridor and the areas around the city.

The city will have maps and lists of parcels in the proposed areas for annexation available on its website at bloomington.in.gov/annex. There also will be a dedicated phone line, 812-349-3802, for people with questions, comments or concerns about the proposal.

Residents of the seven areas proposed for annexation will have 90 days after it is adopted by the council to petition against it.

Public meetings for the rest of the annexation process for the year:
