Bloomington Environmental Commission Announces Sixth Annual Eco-Heroes Contest

Last updated on Friday, February 24, 2017

(BLOOMINGTON) - The Bloomington Environmental Commission announces the sixth annual Eco-Heroes Contest.

An annual art contest with an environmental theme, the Eco-Heros Contest seeks to transform the natural curiosity of local students into a passion for the world around them as they explore their creativity as artists, writers, and craftspeople. Last year's event was a great success with more than 85 outstanding and diverse submissions representing the work of 190 students, which included drawings, poems, quilt designs, and more.

While the contest has always been for local K-12 students, this year the Environmental Commission is collaborating with the Commission on Aging to pilot an additional category for adults. Now participation in the Eco-Heroes Contest is open to Bloomington residents of all ages!

The theme of the 2017 Eco-Heroes Contest is "Embracing Our Aging Planet." Entries based on the theme are welcome in a wide variety of media, including visual art, performance art, language arts, and digital media. Entrants are permitted to collaborate and may work in pairs, groups, or as a class. Entries should be dropped off at the City Planning and Transportation Department located in City Hall (401 N. Morton St.) by Friday, March 31st at 5:00 PM. Text or digital files may also be emailed to Sarah Green at greesa@bloomington.in.gov. Submissions must also include the entrant's name, email, phone number, grade, and school (if applicable). The entry form is available on the city's website.

All submissions will be displayed at City Hall, and awards will be presented to the first, second, and third place winners in each category. Mayor John Hamilton will present each winner with a prize at the awards ceremony on Saturday, April 22nd at 10:00 AM in City Hall.
