(BEDFORD) - The Bedford Recreation Foundation will join forces with the City of Bedford as organizers of the 2017 Limestone Capital Half Marathon.

Bedford Mayor Shawna Girgis made the announcement on Friday.

In 2016, the city purchased the rights to the Limestone Capital Half Marathon from event founder Chris Galloway, a Bedford native now living in Indianapolis.

"The Half-Marathon has proved a great success and the addition of a 5K and 1 Mile Fun Walk has bolstered participation to over 700 adults and young people in 2016," Bedford Mayor Shawna Girgis wrote in a press release. "This event addresses the negative health indicators that has Lawrence County tied with Jackson County for the most obese county in our state. One reason for sustaining the Half-Marathon, including the school challenge, is that it promotes participation of elementary and middle school students and encourages a lifestyle of physical activity that combats obesity and associated chronic diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and many others."

This is the fourth year for the marathon. Online registration will open March 1 at http://bedfordhalfmarathon.com/race-information.

The race is scheduled for October 7 in downtown Bedford.

All races will start and finish at the town square and include a challenging course. There will be commemorative participant shirts for all three events and 3rd annual collector's medals for those in the Half Marathon.

A cash purse will be awarded in the half marathon with a special bonus being paid to the top finishing male and female from Lawrence County.

More than 700 adults and children participated in the half-marathon, 5K and 1 Mile Fun Walk in 2016.

Bedford Parks Director Barry Jeskewich, who will chair the half-marathon committee, will host a meeting on the event and layout the 2017 in the near future.

The committee will coordinate volunteers, develop advertisement, manage registration, as well as, oversee the school challenge and event expo. The city will continue to provide public safety, route monitoring, and block roadways, as well as other services.
