(BLOOMFIELD) - The concept of implicit bias refers to the subconscious attitudes and preferences that researchers say reside in all of us.
Experts say these associations are developed at an early age and even affect those who are committed to impartiality. Understanding these biases and how they impact young people is critical to improving the ways in which adults interact with the youth in their lives.
The Indiana Youth Institute (IYI) and Purdue Extension Greene County partners are hosting a free training session to help youth workers, parents, teachers and other caring adults learn more about implicit bias. The event will be on Tuesday, February 7 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Greene County Community Event Center at the Greene County 4-H Fairgrounds, 4503 West State Road 54 in Bloomfield.
Tashi Teuschler and Ashley Barnett are juvenile justice strategists for the Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI). They will discuss what implicit bias is and how these subconscious preferences can cause unequal and negative outcomes for different groups, specifically minority youth. Teuschler and Barnett will address the role implicit bias can play in the juvenile justice system. Additionally, attendees will learn what must be done in order to minimize and overcome those biases.
