(OOLITIC) - Two people were injured and between 10 to 50 gallons of diesel fuel spilled in an accident Wednesday afternoon on Ind. 37 at Main Street in Oolitic.

According to a Lawrence County Police report, 20-year-old Elijah Johnson of Springville was traveling northbound on Ind. 37 in a 2006 Pontiac Torrant when he drove the vehicle off the west side of the northbound lanes into and crossing the median and went into the southbound lanes of travel.

Johnson's car struck a red 2014 Ford Escape driven by 31-year-old Trista LuAllen then traveled 285 feet north and struck a 2008 Peterbilt tractor-trailer driven by 62-year-old Edward Maddux of Indianapolis. The impacted forced the semi into the median.

Both Johnson and LuAllen were trapped in their vehicles and were freed by Bedford Fire Department extrication unit and Oolitic and Shawswick Volunteer Fire Department firefighters.

LuAllen complained of body pain and Johnson complained of chest pain. Both were taken by ambulance to IU Health Hospital for treatment.

Maddux was not injured during the incident.

Johnson did submit to a drug and alcohol blood test and those results are pending.

Traffic was backed up in both directions on Ind. 37 while emergency crews worked the accident scene.

Emergency Management and IDEM was contacted about the diesel spill. Firefighters were able to build a dam containing the fuel.

Police say the trucking company hired a contractor to mitigate the fuel spill.

Assisting at the scene were both IU and AMR ambulances and the Bedford Police Department.
