Trevor Foughty Named IU Director Of Government Relations And Communications

Last updated on Wednesday, January 25, 2017

(BLOOMINGTON) - Trevor Foughty, an Indiana native who has worked in federal and state government and politics for over a decade, has been named director of government relations and communications for Indiana University.

He will play a primary leadership role in regard to IU government initiatives, help further the university's relationships with legislators and with state and federal policy organizations, and serve as lead communications liaison for the government relations staff.

Mike Sample, the Indiana University vice president for public affairs and government relations, announced the appointment today.

Foughty will report to Jeff Linder, associate vice president for state relations, and will work primarily with the university's state relations team. He will also assist IU's federal relations office, headed by Doug Wasitis, assistant vice president for federal relations.

"We are thrilled to have Trevor Foughty join IU government relations," Linder said. "Trevor will be a dynamic new addition to what is already a very talented, hard-working and successful team. His unique federal experience and communications skills make him the perfect fit to complete the IU government relations lineup."

Foughty served most recently as campaign manager for Sen. Todd Young, R-Ind., who was elected to the U.S. Senate in November. Before that, he was deputy chief of staff and communications director for Young's U.S. House of Representatives office.

"For the past six years, I've had the opportunity to work with IU's government relations office on numerous federal issues," Foughty said. "They are some of the best at what they do, and I'm excited to join their team. But more importantly, I've seen the positive impact IU has on the lives of so many Hoosiers -- from students to medical patients and even to those serving in the military -- and I'm honored to work for such an institution."

A native of Wells County, Indiana, Foughty earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bethel College in Mishawaka, Indiana.

He served as Todd Young's deputy chief of staff and communications director from 2011 to 2015. Previously he handled communications for the Indiana Republican Party and the political action committee of then-Gov. Mitch Daniels. He has also served as assistant communications director for the Indiana Department of Education and campaign manager for various state and congressional campaigns around the state.

The Indiana University Office of State Relations is the primary liaison between the university and the legislative and executive branches of Indiana government, including the Indiana General Assembly, the Office of the Governor, the Indiana Commission for Higher Education and the State Budget Agency. The Office of Federal Relations is IU's primary link to the federal government, working with Congress, the White House and federal agencies on matters that affect the university and higher education.
