(BEDFORD) - To honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. the Indiana region of the American Red Cross will come together on Monday, January 16, to serve the most vulnerable communities across the state, with the Home Fire Campaign.
The American Red Cross of Southern Indiana is partnering with the Bedford Fire Department and IU Health to install smoke alarms, test existing alarms and replace batteries with the help of the Bedford Fire Department.
"We have firefighters who have offered to give a few hours to install smoke alarms," said Dewayne Turpin, fire inspector for the Bedford Fire Department. "In our line of work, we've definitely seen the value of how smoke alarms save lives."

Home fires can happen any time, but generally increase during the fall and winter months when it becomes the coldest. Indiana is among the top 10 states for home fire-related injuries and deaths.
Since December 1, the Indiana Region of the American Red Cross has seen more than 110 disaster events -with 202 families, 532 individuals affected and 11 fatalities.
"It's more important than ever that we all band together to save lives, reduce injuries and needless loss from home fires," said Teena Ligman, disaster team member. "As we look to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we will use his message of service to save lives and prevent fires."

The American Red Cross' Home Fire Campaign is a nationwide, multi-year effort to reduce the number of home fire deaths and injuries by 25 percent. People of all ages are vulnerable to home fires.
