Last updated on Tuesday, January 24, 2017

(BEDFORD) - Shance Sizemore, the chief development officer of the Lawrence County Economic Growth Council, was elected last week as president of the Bedford Redevelopment Authority.

Kyle Brown will serve as vice president and Jack Woods as secretary-treasurer.

The three members were appointed by Bedford Mayor Shawna Girgis. She says the creation of the Redvelopment Authority was needed to secure financing for the Stellar Project - StoneGates Arts and Education Center.

A redevelopment authority is a public entity created by state statute to enable and assist governmental bodies with the financing of public projects. The RDA will meet monthly.

The new education and workforce training center will be built in the location of the former JC Penney's building located at the corner of 15th and J streets. The building will be torn down in late spring or early summer and a new one constructed. It will house Ivy Tech, Oakland City University and Vincennes University.

The estimated cost of the of the new three-story building is $4.2 million. The city received a grant for $1.5 million from the Office of Community and Rural Affairs and the RDC approved a $2.5 million bond for the project. The city is seeking the remaining funds through a loan from the United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development Office.
