Last updated on Tuesday, January 3, 2017

(SEYMOUR) - A Seymour man was injured during a New Year’s Eve celebration when a homemade cannon exploded.

According to a Jackson County Sheriff's Department report, 30-year-old Kyle Sexton was at the home of Robert Helblig, off County Road 600 East when he attempted to "dry fire" the homemade cannon made of a 2-inch steel pipe. There was no ammunition in the cannon.

Sexton suffered a severe leg injury when the cannon exploded sending a piece of the metal pipe into the upper inside of Sexton's right leg causing severe bleeding. A Crothersville officer was the first on the scene at 11:41 p.m. and began administering first aid until medical crews arrived.

Sexton was taken to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour and then flown by helicopter to a Louisville hospital.

Assisting at the scene was a Jackson County Ambulance Service and Crothersville-Vernon Township Fire Department.
