(BLOOMINGTON) - Indiana State Police say a semi driver performing an illegal U-turn caused a wreck on Ind. 37 near Oliver Winery Monday afternoon that sent two people to the hospital.
The accident was reported just before 3 p.m. at West Simpson Chapel Road, near Oliver Winery.
According to an Indiana State police report, a 2007 International semi tractor-trailer driven by 61-year-old Roy Cummings of Medora started across Ind. 37 from Winery Road heading west to Simpson Chapel Road.
Cummings then performed an illegal U-turn and proceeded east across Ind. 37. This maneuver occurred in the path and right of way of a southbound 2011 Chevrolet passenger car driven by 41-year-old Jeremy Johnson of Bedford.
Police say Johnson attempted to avoid impact but was unable to do so.
Once the Chevrolet collided with the trailer of the semi, the semi continued to travel eastbound, causing the passenger car to roll over and become entrapped underneath the trailer.
Jeremy Johnson suffered head and back injuries. His passenger, 37-year-old Elizabeth Johnson, suffered head injuries. Both were transported by ambulance to IU Health Bloomington Hospital.
Cummings was not injured.
Troopers say seat belts were in use during this crash and were effective in reducing the nature of the injuries.
Trooper Gabriel Bault and Trooper Richard Klun investigated the crash. The Monroe County Sheriff's Department, Monroe County and Bloomington Fire and Rescue personnel along with IU Health Bloomington Hospital Emergency Medical Transport Services assisted at the scene.
