(BEDFORD) - Evanna (Evie) Sehr is back at the Bedford office on a permanent basis working as a botany technician.

Sehr had recently worked as a Mobilize Green intern on the Hoosier National Forest (NF) from May through November. She was able to apply for a permanent job when the internship ended.

Sehr is a native of Lawrence County, graduated from Mitchell High School, then received a Bachelor of Science degree from Hannover College in Biology and is working on completing a Master of Science degree in Plant Science from Southern Illinois University.

She has done a variety of things in addition to the Forest Service internship. Sehr had been working as a substitute teacher in the local school system. She also worked two summers with the Navy's Environmental Department at Naval Support Activity - Crane.

The job with the Forest Service was exactly what Sehr was looking for. She likes field work and will work primarily with invasive plant species, though as she did when an intern, she can also work with wildlife and fire. "Working with plants and invasive control is what I enjoy most," said Sehr. "It makes a noticeable difference when you go back the next season and the invasive species are knocked back and the native species have returned." She said it was the same thing with prescribed burning, "We're putting nutrients back in the soil quickly and you see the flush of new growth come back right away."

Sehr said she also enjoys the challenges. "Working with invasive plants is such a puzzle, we're always learning to do a better job. We keep tweaking the timing of the treatment or the herbicides we use. And then new invasives come in that we have to figure out so we're always learning," Sehr notes.

Sehr is a young woman of many interests including knitting, hiking, and hunting.
