Monroe County Jail Adding Online Video Chatting As Visitation Option

Last updated on Monday, January 16, 2017

(BLOOMINGTON) - The Monroe County jail is adding an online video chatting as a visitation option.

According to the Associated Press inmates will be able to use tablets to "chat" with people who may not otherwise be able to come to visitation.

The tablets will cost 15 cents a minute to use, compared with 24 cents a minute for phone calls.

Telmate will provide the tablets to the jail at no cost. Telmate will make its profits from charging inmates for the use of the tablets. There will be more than two dozen tablets available at the jail.

Inmates will also be able to rent movies and play video games, for a charge.

Officials say the online option is not replacing on-site visitations.
