(BLOOMINGTON) - An Indiana University student was arrested Monday night after she attempted to steal food and ended with her attacking police officers and paramedics.

Bloomington Police arrested 21-year-old Megan Hinds of Park Ridge, Illinois on two charges of battery on a public safety officer and disorderly conduct.

According to Bloomington Police Capt. Steve Kellams, officers were called to the Jimmy John's at 430 E. Kirkwood Ave. at 6:30 p.m. after a report that a woman had entered the sandwich shop, grabbed a loaf of bread and started eating it without paying for it. She then attempted to take bags of chips and other items.

When employees tried to stop her she lashed out at them and struck them several times, hitting one employee in the stomach.

When police entered the restaurant, they found Hinds sitting at a table and she appeared intoxicated. An ambulance was called to the scene because of her level of intoxication.

Capt. Kellams says when the officers approached Hinds she told one of them she believed he was profiling her because she was white and ugly. She then became verbally abusive with the officer. And started swinging at them as they attempted to remove her from the restaurant.

While waiting for paramedics Hinds continued to be verbally abusive and started striking out the officers, scratching one on the hand.

While en route to the hospital, Hinds allegedly began striking the paramedics, hitting one in the face.

After being medically cleared at the hospital she was taken to the Monroe County Jail. She was booked into the jail at 11:45 p.m. He bond was set at $2,000 surety, $500 cash.
