(LAWRENCEPORT) - Four Orleans men were cited into court after Conservation officer say they attempting to shoot a bobcat from a boat on the White River Sunday morning.
According to Indiana Conservation Officer Jim Schreck, 32-year-old Christopher Hudelson, 21-year-old Joseph Hudelson, 32-year-old Michael Cooper and 33-year-old Adam Marshall were charged with hunting without consent and/or criminal trespassing.
Early Sunday, two Indiana Conservation Officers saw shots being fired from a boat near the Lawrenceport boat ramp on the White River, Schreck said.
The men eventually docked the boat on a bank, and exited on private property. Officers met the four men at the boat ramp where it was determined at least one of the men had shot from the boat at the bobcat.
Bobcats, the only resident native wild cat in Indiana, are a species of great curiosity. Because they are generally a solitary and secretive animal.
Between 1970 and 2014, the IDNR received bobcat reports from 63 Indiana counties. Although bobcat reports are more common in southern Indiana, confirmed reports have been received from west-central and northern regions.
A study conducted by the IDNR in south-central Indiana revealed that bobcats are capable of dispersing up to 100 miles from where they were born. Their ability to cover long distances allows them to spread into available habitat. It also puts them close to roadways. Vehicle collisions are now a common cause of bobcat mortalities.
