(BLOOMINGTON) - A former Indiana University student who was arrested after he attacked a Muslim woman outside of a Bloomington cafe will not spend any time in jail.
Monroe County Circuit Court Judge Teresa Harper, sentenced 20-year-old Triceten Derrick Bickford to one year on probation.
On Oct. 15, 2015, Bloomington Police arrested Bickford on charges of battery against a public safety officer, strangulation, intimidation, battery resulting in bodily harm and battery by bodily waste. An investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI determined that Bickford's attack against the woman was not a hate crime.
Judge Teresa Harper dropped the charges to a single misdemeanor battery charge, which Bickford pleaded guilty to Monday. Bickford told Judge Harper that he was acting in an intoxicated stupor, not as a racist.
The day of the attack Bickford could be heard yelling "white power" and "kill the police." Police say he approached the woman while she was sitting at a table outside Sofra Cafe with her 9-year-old daughter and started squeezing her neck and pushing her head toward the table. Police say Bickford tried to remove the woman's head scarf during the assault.
Bickford was expelled from IU "as a direct result" of the incident.
