(WILLIAMS) - Williams and Indian Creek Volunteer Fire Department Firefighters responded to a report of a house fire on Water Street on Monday afternoon.

According to Indian Creek VFD Chief Monty Wright, firefighters were called to the home at 37 Water Street at 6:18 p.m.

"The fire was reported after a neighbor saw smoke coming from the eves," says Wright. "They then called police and the homeowner."

Williams VFD responded with two trucks and six firefighters, Indian Creek brought two trucks and about a dozen firefighters.

The fire started after the homeowner put hot coals into a bucket with other debris.

"They had every intention of taking the bucket outside, but forgot," Wright says. "The bucket was sitting next to a wooden rocking chair, next to the door."

The homeowner left. The coals ignited the debris in the bucket, which ignited the rocking chair.

"The homeowner returned within minutes, and with the help of other family members they were able to grab buckets of water, gain entry and douse the fire," Wright says. "They didn't go into the home because there was smoke from floor to ceiling."

Firefighters, wearing protective gear, entered the smoke-filled house to make sure the fire had not spread and then used fans to ventilate the home.

"They were really really lucky," Wright says. "This could have been a whole lot worse."
