Capt. James Lawrence, the namesake of Lawrence County. After being mortally wounded, he called out, "Don't give up the ship" which became the rally cry of the U.S. Navy.

(BEDFORD) - Some "enthusiastic doers" are needed to help prepare for Lawrence County's Bicentennial celebration.

The county's actual commemoration date is March 1, 2018.

The Lawrence County commissioners appointed Marla Jones, Marla Jones, business and community development director for the city of Bedford, to serve as director of Lawrence County's celebration.

The bicentennial will allow everyone an opportunity to participate in a wide variety of bicentennial projects.

Jones is seeking "enthusiastic doers" to serve on a Lawrence Bicentennial Commission.

"Members of the commission will represent the major segment of the community, but will be small enough to be flexible and efficient," Jones says.

The commission will plan, implement and coordinate several activities including:

  • The creation of a monument to honor the county's namesake, Captain James Lawrence, to be installed and dedicated during the celebration in a prominent location on the courthouse lawn.
  • A Bicentennial Torch Relay that will travel through all nine townships and is coordinated through the township trustees or their appointees.
  • A Bicentennial Poetry Book, which would feature Lawrence County inspired poems by area students and local citizens.
  • Bicentennial Song, written by talented individuals who love Lawrence County and call it home.
