CBU Officials Respond To Wastewater Release At Blucher Poole Wastewater Treatment Plant

Last updated on Friday, January 6, 2017

(BLOOMINGTON) - An electrical malfunction associated with the pumping system at the Blucher Poole Wastewater Treatment Plant resulted in 104,500 gallons of untreated wastewater being discharged into Bean Blossom Creek earlier Thursday.

The situation was corrected within minutes upon discovery and no abnormalities were observed during a subsequent inspection of the creek.

"We're evaluating every possible scenario as to why the electrical malfunction occurred," said CBU Director Vic Kelson. "We will be conducting a thorough analysis of the electrical system at the plant to prevent similar situations from happening again in the future. It has been repaired and we do not anticipate any additional discharges as a result."

An internal investigation is underway to determine what caused the electrical failure.

"Our plant operators and maintenance staff are trained to respond to all types of situations, and all of the proper steps were followed," said Kelson.

Kelson said IDEM was notified of the incident as is required.
