Bedford Man Arrested On Drug And Alcohol Charges After Crashing Vehicle

Last updated on Thursday, January 26, 2017

(BEDFORD) - A Bedford man was arrested on drug and alcohol charges after he crashed his vehicle in the 2600 block of I Street early this morning.

Bedford Police arrested 30-year-old Charles Hardin of Bedford on charges of possession of both a Schedule II and IV controlled substances, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also cited for having a false registration and open container.

According to Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley, when officers arrived at the scene they found Hardin's vehicle off the west side of the road in some trees.

"Officers determined Hardin had been drinking because his speech was slurred and he smelled of alcohol," Parsley added. "They then asked if he had anything in his pocket and he said yes a knife."

Officers also found a plastic bag of pills and a smoking device in his pockets.

Hardin was arrested and taken to a local hospital to be medically cleared and for a blood-alcohol draw.

"They then inventoried the vehicle so it could be towed and found a plastic container that contained digital scales and more of a green-leafy substance that tested positive for marijuana," Chief Parsley added. "The vehicle was also littered with open containers of an alcoholic beverage."

After being medically cleared at the hospital, Hardin was transported to the Lawrence County Jail.
