(SPRINGVILLE) - A Springville man was arrested after he refused to stop his vehicle on Ind. 37 near Oolitic after a Lawrence County Police officer attempted to stop his vehicle after he failed to stop for the stoplight.

According to Lawrence County Chief Deputy Aaron Shoults, Capt. Dave Flynn was traveling northbound on Ind. 37 at 1:20 a.m. this morning and had a green light and entered the intersection at the same time as a westbound white pickup. The driver of the white vehicle failed to stop for the red light.

Capt. Flynn was able to swerve the police vehicle he was driving to avoid a collision and then turned around and attempted to stop the driver, which had continued at high-rate of speed, west up Patton Hill in an attempt to elude the officer.

The fleeing vehicle lost the topper from the back of his pickup on Indiana Creek Road and fled out of sight of the officer.

The pickup turned north onto Reuter Lane, where the Capt. Flynn found the driver standing outside of the vehicle.

The driver, later identified at 31-year-old Dustin Couch, of Springville, re-entered the vehicle and fled down the driveway at a high-rate of speed to what the officer believes was the driver's home.

The driver then exited the vehicle, approached Capt. Flynn and began screaming and yelling and physically resisted arrest.

"A Taser was used to bring the driver under control," Chief Deputy Shoults says." Mr. Couch was later transported to IU Health and medically cleared after officers obtained a blood sample for alcohol intoxication. He was then transported to the jail."

Couch is facing charges of resisting arrest by fleeing, resisting arrest by force, reckless driving.
