(SEYMOUR) - A Seymour man was sentenced to 40 years in prison for stabbing pregnant woman in Jackson County Circuit Court.

Seymour Police Chief Bill Abbott says Justin Colvin was arrested after DNA found on the knife was identified as his. The knife was confirmed to be used in a stabbing in the 100 block of West Brown Street in Seymour.

The woman, who was in her early 20s and about 16 weeks pregnant, was at home asleep at 7:30 a.m., when Colvin allegedly entered the residence and attacked her with a steak knife.

Police say the woman was woken up by the man straddling her. She then fought with Colvin and that is when he pulled the knife.

The woman was stabbed at least six times, with the worst of the wounds to the woman's right eye and upper part of her body including her head, neck and arms and hands.

During the attack, police say that Colvin held the woman's face down so she couldn't see him and he did not say anything.

Police believe the motive may have been an attempted sexual assault, but police say Colvin also stole some small items from the home.

After the attack the woman fled to a neighbor's house, pounding on the door and screaming for help. The neighbor called police.

The woman was taken by ambulance to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment. The baby was unharmed during the incident.
