(SALEM) - Salem High School officials held a groundbreaking ceremony last week for the construction of a safe room at Bradie Shurm.

The Salem Tribune reports that the school started the process of gathering information about a FEMA grant to build safe rooms back in 2012 and the school was awarded $1.6 million in July 2015 to build a set of tornado-proof rooms that would be able to shelter the population of the school, plus any visitors the school might have at the time.

Early this month, the Salem Community Schools board awarded a construction bid to David Construction of Louisville. The reinforced structure will provide four classrooms and a large multipurpose instructional area.

The project is anticipated to be finished in September 2017.
