Mitchell Teen Arrested After Shooting Man Who Was Allegedly Hurting His Mother

Last updated on Wednesday, December 28, 2016

(MITCHELL) - A Mitchell teen was transported to the Jackson County Detention Center after police say he shot the man who was beating up his mother on Tuesday night.

Police arrested 16-year-old Santana Jones of Mitchell on two Level 3 felony charges of aggravated battery, two counts of battery with a deadly weapon, Level 5 felonies and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, also a Level 5 felony.

"There are so many layers in this case," Sheriff Mike Branham says. "We have a battery, alcohol was involved and a weapon was involved. There may be more charges brought against others involved in this case. We are still in the middle of the investigation."

According to Sheriff Branham, three Lawrence County Police Department officers, a reserve officer and two Mitchell Police officers responded to the home in the 1080 block of Mill Creek Road after a report of a domestic fight with someone being shot.

An AMR and IU Health Hospital ambulance and Marion Volunteer Fire Department first responders also rushed to the scene.

When police arrived they found Jones' 36-year-old mother had been assaulted. She suffered a busted lip, swelling to her eye and complained of side pain.

The man accused of battering her, 41-year-old Daniel McNulty of Crawfordsville, had suffered at least two gunshot wounds.

"We know he suffered two gunshot wounds and possibly more," says Sheriff Branham. "He had one [shot] to his chest and one to the area of his ear. What we have gathered is that Jones was attempting to stop the man from injuring his mother."

Also shot was a 15-year-old male who lived in the home. He was injured when he attempted to stop the shooting.

"He suffered an accidental gunshot wound to his hand when he attempted to grab the rifle," Sheriff Branham added.

Police recovered a .22-caliber rifle at the scene.

"It is still unclear who owns that weapon," Sheriff Branham added.

Officers on the scene say everyone involved had been drinking, including the teens.

"Officers smelled alcohol on everyone involved," Sheriff Branham says.

McNulty was flown by Air Evac to the University of Louisville Hospital. The teen, who was shot, was flown to an Indianapolis Hospital where he is undergoing hand surgery today.

"Detectives are planning on traveling to the hospitals tomorrow to gather more information about the incident," Sheriff Branham says. "Currently we have no update on their medical conditions."
