(BLOOMINGTON) - Bloomington police are looking for a robber who held a man at gunpoint on Tuesday.

The victim, a 21-year-old man, called police at 10:30 a.m. reporting he had been robbed at gunpoint while he waited for a bus at 17th Street and College Avenue.

The man told police he had overslept and missed his usual bus to work. So he was waiting at the bus stop listening to music and waiting for the next but when he was approached by a male on a bicycle riding on the sidewalk. The male moved out of the cyclist's way. The cyclist then asked the male for a cigarette and rode off.

Bloomington Capt. Steve Kellams says around twenty minutes later, the man returned, on foot to the bus stop.

Police say the man pointed a black handgun at the 21-year-old and threatened to shoot him if he didn't hand over his wallet, cash and cellphone.

Capt. Kellams says that after turning over his possessions the 21-year-old asked for them back and offered to take the armed man to an ATM instead.

The two walked to the ATM at the nearby Peoples State Bank, and the 21-year-old withdrew cash from his account. They then went to the Circle K convenience store, where the robber reportedly apologized and then fled.

The robber is a 6-foot white man with a thick and unkempt beard. He wore a black coat with several hooded sweatshirts underneath.

Bloomington police released pictures of the suspect taken from security footage at the bank's ATM.

Anyone with information about the incident or suspect is asked to call Bloomington Detective Joe Henry at (812) 349-3907.
