(BLOOMINGTON) - A sizeable check and a standing ovation were bestowed Tuesday on Ted Jackson, director of Pulmonary and Radiology Services at IU Health Bloomington Hospital.

Long-time director receives Kohr leadership award

Foundation presents outstanding leadership award to Ted Jackson

The 25-plus year employee was given the Roland E. "Bud" Kohr Outstanding Leadership Award. He joins a prestigious list of leaders who have previously earned the distinction.

Jon Barada, president of the Bloomington Hospital Foundation, presented the award which honors the late Bud Kohr, former president and CEO of Bloomington Hospital. It is given to a nominated "outstanding hospital leader at the director level or above" who personifies excellence in their leadership within the organization.

Jackson was praised in the nomination and by Barada for being a trusted individual who applies Lean principles and represents servant leadership. Jackson says he is honored to receive the award and notes that so many other leaders are worthy of the praise. He also touted the leadership traits of the late Kohr.

"I remember during my new employee orientation in 1989 where Bud Kohr would lead us all on a 'blind walk' through the hospital," Jackson says. Blindfolded, the newcomers would wind their way through the hallways, units and classrooms. "This was one way Mr. Kohr displayed very quickly that we would all help each other at Bloomington Hospital."

Jackson shared a bit of personal history that brought him to this point. When he was only 11, Jackson's father died of Guillain-Barré Syndrome, spending three months on a respirator before his untimely death at age 36. Jackson found his calling after that tragic incident. "Helping care for my father led me to become a respiratory therapy professional," Jackson shares.

As a leader, Jackson says he believes in some basic operational principles. "When there's an exception, you get to be exceptional," he says, suggesting that it's always an opportunity. "When something isn't quite right or doesn't go by the book, you have permission to do what's right - to make it right."

Of the more-than 40 awards the Foundation presents annually, this is the only award exclusively reserved for members of the IU Health Bloomington leadership group. The winner receives a $2,500 cash award.
