IU Board Of Trustees Approve Plan For New Parking Garage

Last updated on Monday, December 5, 2016

(BLOOMINGTON) - The IU Board of Trustees unanimously approved to build a new parking garage and attached administration building north of 11th Street between Forrest Avenue and Walnut Grove Street.

The parking garage will add 675 new parking spaces at Indiana University by the end of 2018.

Tom Morrison, IU vice president for capital planning and facilities, says the project has been part of the university's master plan. In addition to making Woodlawn Avenue a major north and south thoroughfare through campus, that plan called for creating a new academic quad east of Woodlawn Avenue.

The quad is formed by the geology building to the south, the multi-disciplinary science research building completed in 2009 to the east and Luddy Hall, which is currently under construction, to the west. The academic office building and parking garage forms the north side of the quad.

The entire project is expected to cost about $35 million. That will also cover the cost of demolishing the master's of fine arts printmaking studios and the arts annex building that are located on the spot where the garage and administrative facility will be built. The activities conducted in those buildings will be moved to another location that has not yet been determined, Morrison said.

The office building is expected to be 57,000 gross square feet. A design for the entire facility will come before the IU Board of Trustees for approval at a later date. Morrison expects the project to be finished in December 2018.
