(SULLIVAN CO.) - Senior Indiana Conservation Officer Matt Landis has been selected by his peers as the District Five Officer of the Year and nominee for the coveted Law Enforcement Division's 2016 James D. Pitzer Award.

A native of Monroe County, Officer Landis graduated from Bloomington High School North. Officer Landis went on to attend Vincennes University, graduating with a Law Enforcement degree in 2002. He then furthered his education by attending Indiana University, graduating with a Legal Studies degree. Officer Landis began participating in the selection process to become an Indiana Conservation Officer.

In 2006, Officer Landis was accepted into the Indiana Conservation Officer Recruit School and was subsequently appointed as a Probationary Officer assigned primarily to Sullivan County in Operational District Five, where he has remained throughout his career. During his distinguished career, Officer Landis has served as a Public Safety Scuba Diver, Side-Scan Sonar Operator, and Field Training Officer.

Officer Landis will compete for the James D. Pitzer Officer of the Year Award along with nominees from all ten Districts across the State. The award's namesake, Officer James D. Pitzer, was killed in the line of duty. Selection for this award will be made by the Law Enforcement Division Command Staff; based on the nominee's overall professional bearing, dedication to the law enforcement profession, and service to the public.

District Five encompasses eight counties in west-central Indiana: Vermillion, Parke, Putnam, Vigo, Clay, Owen, Greene, and Sullivan. Officer Landis and his family reside in rural Sullivan County.
