(BLOOMFIELD) - The Greene County Council and Commissioners will be meeting together December 12 to come up with a plan to address the jail overcrowding issue.
Greene County Sheriff Mike Hasler told the Greene County Daily World that a change in sentencing guidelines puts offenders with Level 6 felony convictions in the county jails rather than the state facilities as was the previous practice. This change leaves inmates in the county jail up to three years, taking up bed space for that time frame.
According to Sheriff Hasler the jail has a capacity of 84 beds, recently has had up to 100 people in the jail -- a few which will be spending up to a three year sentence. He recently purchased 15 sled beds, all of which are in use.
Hasler said in comparison, he used to have up to 15 beds set aside to help with housing of state inmates, which generated revenue at $35 per day per inmate. The state has offered to house county inmates for $70 per day.
Council members are hoping to implement a plant for a 60-bed expansion and remodel the intake area. The anticipated cost for the project is and estimated $8 million.
