(BLOOMFIELD) - The Greene County Council and County Commissioners met in joint session Monday afternoon to discuss the future of the Greene County Jail.

After an almost two hour discussion, the council approved a resolution to move forward with the proposed 70-bed expansion at the Greene County Jail. The resolution states the council's support of the project with the understanding the commissioners report back to the council with "a proposed plan of action, including recommendations for the proposed design and scope of the project."

Sheriff Mike Hasler told the Greene County Daily World that the expansion is needed due to the change in sentencing guidelines - which resulted in Level 6 felonies spending their sentences at the county jail causing serious overcrowding issues.

The Greene County Jail has a maximum capacity of 84 inmates, but in the first 12 days of December the jail has had an average daily count of 102 inmates.

The cost of the expansion is between $8 to $10 million with plans to use the existing commissary and kitchen to save money. The project would probably be complete by December 2018 if work begins right away.
