Bedford Man Arrested After Throwing Heroin Under Police Vehicle

Last updated on Tuesday, December 13, 2016

(BEDFORD) - A Lawrence County man was arrested Wednesday after he was caught on video throwing a white plastic container under a police vehicle that contained heroin.

According to police reports, a Lawrence County Police officer was entering his vehicle parked on 15th Street, just after noon on Wednesday, when he noticed a white Cadillac parked on the south side of the jail near the fence.

The officers drove around the block and parked behind the vehicle and confronted 26-year-old Matthew Johnson of Bedford, who was standing near the fence at the jail.

Police say there were two other people in the parked Cadillac. At that point more officers were called to assist at the scene. That is when one of them noticed a white plastic container under the original responding officer's car. Inside that container was a tan, powdery substance that field-tested positive for heroin.

When police checked video footage at the jail, it captured Johnson throwing the container under the officer's vehicle.

Johnson was charged with possession of heroin, a narcotic drug.
