Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence County Night In Black And White

Last updated on Monday, November 7, 2016

(BEDFORD) - The Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence County honored William “Bill” Baker Friday night.

For 36 years Baker donated his time and talents at the Thornton Memorial Boys Club where he served as Assistant Director and then Director. Children grow and succeed was his passion.

During the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence County "A Night in Black and White" auction and dinner Friday, officials honored Baker, who died in February, by establishing a club scholarship in his name.

The club raised an estimated $60,000, of that $31,000 was collected for the Baker Scholarship Fund

Resource Director and Marketing Coordinator Zarod Myers says, Baker was the first to pull out his wallet to help a child in need.

"If the child couldn't pay for something, he would," Myers added.

The scholarship funds will help youth in true Baker form, by paying for items children can't afford like their annual club membership fee or sports fees.

On of the top auction items was a one week stay in Florida.

"We had a bidding war," Meyers says. "The winning bid was $5,500."

But the bidding didn't stop there.

"Doug Kellams, who donated the vacation, offered a second week to the backup bidder for $5,250 and they took it," Meyers added. "It was totally unexpected. That one vacation package added up to more than $10,000."

Last year's B&G Club dinner and auction raised $70,000, which was double previous auctions. Dinner guests donated $25,000 to the Keystone Club and Teen Center.

"This year turn out was a little low with only around 250 people attending," Myers added. "But for my first year, I am still very pleased. We took notes and will make next year more interactive and even better."
