Last updated on Monday, November 28, 2016

(MITCHELL) - Spring Mill State Park and Cave River Valley Nature Preserve in Campbellsburg will hold deer-reduction hunts on today and Tuesday.

According to Mark Young, property manager at Spring Mill, the hunts are held to maintain the plant life when dealing with large deer populations.

Sixty hunters were selected for each hunt at Spring Mill with 14 hunters at Cave River Valley where 14 hunters were selected.

Two weeks ago, both properties hosted a reduction hunt, and hunters killed 48 deer at Spring Mill and 13 at Cave River Valley. No hunt was held last year, but one was held in killed in 2014 with 31 deer harvested.

Hunters entered the parks at 5 a.m. today and will begin hunting at 7:30 a.m. Hunters can stay in the field until 4 p.m. each day. The park will reopen at 4 or 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Both Brown County and McCormick's Creek will be closed today and Tuesday for deer reduction hunts. There will hunts held at 17 state parks this year.
