Salvation Army, ABATE Need The Public's Help In Providing Christmas For Lawrence County Youth

Last updated on Tuesday, November 8, 2016

(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County Salvation Army will still offer their annual Christmas assistance to local children, Angel Tree and a Red Kettle campaign at local retailers.

The organization has been in transition since the departure of Capt. Donna Rose in June.

Susan Solmon, director of social services told the Times Mail that one service that won't be offered is the men's warming center, which was a partnership between the Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.

Currently, a volunteer is staffing the office at 17th and K streets. Officials are looking for a part-time person to staff the office. Several prospects have applied but applicants didn't show up for interviews or didn't respond to follow-up calls. But officials hope to fill the position soon.

Those wishing to file for Christmas assistance can do so by calling the Salvation Army and leaving a message. Someone will call you back with details on how to apply

In the meantime, the office volunteer is working in the office and taking names of families applying for Christmas assistance.

This year ABATE will again help with its annual Toys for Tots Christmas party. The party will be Dec. 18 at the Indiana National Guard Armory.

Last year the group provided gifts and a pizza party for more than 350 children.

But they need the public's help because donations are down this year.

Volunteers will be conducting roadblocks on November 12 at Rural King and on November 19 at Johnny Junxions in Judah .

The group also is taking donations of new, unwrapped toys. Donation boxes are at Bedford Ford, Bedford Chrysler Dodge, Unique Boutique on Washington Avenue, Rural King, Dollar General in Oolitic, Orscheln on State Road 37 and Springleaf in Williams Crossing.

Officials ask that toys have a value of $10 and up.

If the group doesn't see an increase of donations, they will only be able to help around 250 children.

The group did hear some good new. The Bedford North Lawrence Student Council and Beta Club will provide about $1,000 worth of toys.

If donors want to arrange for toy donations to be picked up, they can call Mary Lou Harris, (812) 508-2402 or Bill Hanners, (812) 797-6780.
