One Dead In House Explosion Near Spencer

Last updated on Thursday, November 17, 2016

(OWEN CO.) - One man has died in a house explosion outside of Spencer.

The explosion happened Wednesday afternoon in the 4400 block of Newport Drive near Rolling Meadows Golf Course.

The Owen Valley Fire Department was called to the scene around 12:18 p.m. after receiving several reports of a loud explosion and a residential fire.

When crews arrived, they found the home completely destroyed, with debris scattered more than 200 yards from the home.

Fire officials say they haven't yet determined a cause for the explosion, but they believe it was an isolated incident and do not believe there is any threat to public safety.

Crews spent hours Wednesday evening collecting any evidence they could find in the rubble.

"They were extremely concerned and upset. Mostly concerned for their neighbor, wanted to know if anybody did get hurt," says Owen County Sheriff Sam Hobbs. "What we're thankful for is that no innocent bystanders were hurt. Either on the road or in adjoining properties."

The state fire marshal and the ATF are investigating the explosion. Investigators believe the explosion was an isolated incident and no one else is in danger.

The victim has not yet been identified.
