Officials: Gas Line Tampered With Prior To Deadly Explosion

Last updated on Friday, November 18, 2016

(SPENCER) - Officials say that they have concluded their investigation into a fatal house explosion Wednesday in Owen County.

The investigation involved members of the Indiana Department of Homeland Security and the State Fire Marshal, with assistance from the Owen County Sheriff's Department, the Owen Valley Fire Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

Investigators believe that a gas line valve may have been tampered with prior to the explosion, but the official cause has been listed as undetermined due to the extensive damage.

The explosion occurred in the 4400 block of Newport Drive near Rolling Meadows Golf Course. When crews arrived, they found the home destroyed, with debris scattered 200 yards from the home.

Spencer residents that live a mile away from the home said they felt their house shake as a result of the explosion.

Officials have not identified the person who died in the blast.
