(LINTON) - Hunters and farmers are reminded they can donate their meat this hunting season to the Linton SON Ministries Community Food Pantry.
Although donations can be made year-round, Pastor Doris Sparks of Trinity Lutheran Church in Linton says there are many hunters who like the hunt, but who might not like to eat the catch.
Beef, pork, and deer may be donated, and must be processed by the pantry's licensed processor, which is at no cost to the donor. Sparks say the meat must be processed, ground, frozen and separated into one pound bags for easier distribution and to provide more cooking options.
"We have the food pantry, which is currently servicing about 1000 people per month in the 47441 zip code. At the present time, we have a critical need for higher quality protein," Sparks told the Greene County Daily World.

The Linton Community Food Pantry operates on donations, and is a collaborative effort by the Linton Assembly of God, Linton Church of Christ, Linton First Christian Church, Linton First United Methodist Church , Saron United Church of Christ, St. Peter's Catholic Church and Trinity Lutheran Church. The congregations together make up SON Ministries, which is the non-profit organization providing the Linton Community Food Pantry operating with volunteer staff only.
Donations of fresh garden produce are also accepted, with fruit, vegetables and bread available at the pantry on a weekly basis.
Food items, quality clothing and linens can be taken to donations bins located at the entrances of Linton First Christian Church, or taken to the thrift store during regular business hours. Donations are tax deductible, and 100 percent of monetary donations go towards supporting the purchase of food to stock the pantry.
The Pantry also receives USDA commodities, donations from local stores like Wal-Mart and Baesler's Market, as well as donations of bread from Pepperidge Farm.
To receive food from the pantry, residents can sign up to visit the pantry once a month by providing identification or mail, as the pantry services the Linton area zip code.
The pantry is located on 440 NE E Street in Linton, and is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-4 p.m., and on Saturday from 10 a.m.-12 p.m.
