BNL Senior Maitlyn Alvey Crowned Distinguished Young Woman

(BEDFORD) - Maitlyn Alvey was crowned the 2017 Lawrence County Distinguished Young Woman Saturday night.

The Bedford North Lawrence High School senior and daughter of Curt and Melissa Alvey will now compete at the state level in Kokomo in February.

Alvey plans to study nursing after she graduates.

Alvey won $2,300 in scholarship money. Coming in second was Kara Parkes, who won $1,100. The third-place winner, Paige Courtright, was awarded $500, and a fourth winner, Kelsey Enlow, won $300. The spirit award went to Abby Banks, who received $250.

Two girls were selected as top performers in each of the five categories, and they each won $200.

They were:

  • Talent: Maitlyn Alvey and Kara Parkes.
  • Fitness: Paige Courtright and Maitlyn Alvey.
  • Interview: Kara Parkes and Maitlyn Alvey.
  • Self expression: Paige Courtright and Maitlyn Alvey.
  • Scholastic: Paige Courtright and Kelsey Enlow.

Twelve senior girls from Mitchell and Bedford North Lawrence high schools competed in the program at the Bedford North Lawrence High School Performing Arts Center.
