(MITCHELL) - A blaze destroyed an abandoned home at 215 West Main Street in Mitchell Saturday night.

The fire was reported at 7:19 p.m. by a neighbor.

The home was engulfed in flames when Mitchell and Marion Township Volunteer Fire Departments arrived on the scene. A Seals ambulance was also called to the scene.

According to Mitchell Assistant Fire Chief Fred Cassidy, it took all of the firefighters working together to extinguish the blaze.

Firefighters worked for more than 4 hours battling the blaze.

A backhoe was used to loosen up boards and debris inside the home, so firefighters could further soak the abandoned home.

Firefighters also took steps to make sure the buildings on either side of the blaze didn't ignite.

"There was some damage to the siding of the building located to the left of the burning home," Cassidy added. "We also doused the roof of the home on the right."

The State Fire Marshal is investigating what started the fire.

The home was scheduled to be torn down by the city, because it didn't meet the city's building codes.
