Bedford Adopts Policies To Deal With Federal Fair Labor Standards Act

Last updated on Thursday, November 24, 2016

(BEDFORD) - As the December 1 deadline for the enactment of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act approaches, the city of Bedford moved to adopt new standards to comply with the laws regarding pay and overtime.

The Times Mail reports that Sam Craig, the city's human resources director, addressed the Bedford Board of Works Monday on issues relating to FLSA. He says the city had three different polices for employees who work on-call. He said the city can no longer have three different policies so one policy was adopted for all employees.

Under the new policy, all city employees will be under the same guidelines for how their time will be calculated for payment. Craig also presented an amended pay and operating hours schedule for approval to comply with FLSA. He explained different departments have different start and end times to their work day, depending on their duties. He checked with all departments to make sure that, despite the different start times, work hours were the same.
