(SWITZ CITY) - A Shelburn woman is facing charges after she allegedly struck a construction worker with her vehicle and then left the scene of the accident.
Police say 73-year-old Virginia Spencer is facing preliminary charges of failing to stop after an accident, failing to stop after an accident resulting in bodily injury and failing to stop after an accident resulting in serious bodily injury.
According to Greene County Sheriff's Department police report, on October 18 Spencer struck a female construction worker with her vehicle on State Road 54 in the area of White River Valley High School and then drove away.
The worker suffered a broken arm, broken ribs and contusions, abrasions and lacerations to her head and shoulders as well as a ruptured spleen.
Investigation found at the scene the outside casing of a rear view mirror and several parts from the casing, including a reflective light insert.
White River Valley High School personnel provided police security video showing a small, black in color, SUV traveling westbound on State Road 54 strick the worker along the north side of the roadway and then continued traveling westward.
A search of the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles database produced seven results within Greene and Sullivan Counties.
On October 19, a deputy located a vehicle matching the one that fled the scene. Spencer was driving the vehicle with her son Matthew as a passenger.
During a police interview Matthew told police his mother drives him to and from work every day. He told police that on the day of the accident his mother told him she had struck an orange barrel in the construction zone damaging her car. He told police he had attempted for several months to get Spencer to stop driving.
Police also spoke to Virginia Spencer, who told police she was employed by a healthcare business and was traveling to visit clients in the Terre Haute when she struck an orange barrel at approximately 8 a.m., but couldn't remember where on State Road 54 the construction zone was. After striking the barrel, she continued westbound on State Road 54 for a few minutes and then pulled over to see if there was any damage to her vehicle.
But police say there was no orange barrels in the construction zone where the worker was struck.
Paint chips were removed from the vehicle and the remaining piece of the passenger side rear view mirror, which had four internal bolt locations broken off at various lengths. The bolt locations and lengths perfectly matched the mirror casing recovered at the scene of the accident.
A warrant was issued for her arrest, as of Thursday she had not been arrested.
