(SPRINGVILLE) - A fire early Monday morning destroyed a Springville home.

Perry and Marshall Township firefighters were alerted to the blaze at 4:24 a.m. and some of the firefighters were at the home within a minute.

This is the 8th questionable fire Perry VFD has responded to in the last six weeks.

According to Perry VFD Chief Max Peters, the fire started under the northwest corner of the back deck and quickly spread.

"The roof had fallen in when we arrived," Peters added. "No one saw the blaze because it started at the back of the house. There is nothing back there but 50 acres of woods. It wasn't noticed until the fire had consumed the home."

The house is owned by Jason Newlin of Mitchell and was vacant when the fire started.

"Crews were scheduled to be there this morning to begin renovations," says Peters. "He had purchased the house with plans to renovate it and use it as rental property."

The State Fire Marshal has ruled the cause of fire undetermined, but questionable.

"Normally we respond to 1 or 2 house fires a year," Peters says. "This has taken a toll on the department. Running to fires is expensive. It is not cheap to put fuel in those fire trucks."

Peters estimates the department has spend more than a $1,000 in fuel cost in a month.
