(BLOOMINGTON) - The Monroe County Energy Challenge (MCEC) is launching a new program aimed at improving energy efficiency in Monroe County.
During the month of October, MCEC will distribute 1,000 free LED light bulbs through Project Porchlight, an initiative designed to encourage local residents to implement energy-saving practices and technologies in their homes.
The initiative focuses on porch lights because they often indicate the overall efficiency of the home. If a home is wasting energy on the front porch by leaving the light on 24 hours a day or having old, inefficient incandescent bulbs, it's likely a similar story inside the house.
MCEC will be doing door-to-door outreach and hosting a variety of energy fairs and events at neighborhood parks and local hardware stores to distribute the LED light bulbs throughout the county. Monroe County is one of 50 communities competing for the $5 million Georgetown University Energy Prize. The Georgetown University Energy Prize is a nationwide, two-year energy savings competition focused on reducing natural gas and electricity use in residences, municipal buildings, and K-12 schools.
