(HUNTINGBURG) - A pilot was injured when the 1941 Luscombe antique single-engine airplane he was operating crashed Wednesday at the Huntingburg airport.
The pilot, Steve Miller, was able to exit the plane on his own, before taken by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment of abrasions and bruises.
The crash happened around 9:57 a.m. Airport Manager Travis McQueen says early indications to a stiff crosswind gusting up to 18 knots out of the south may have contributed to the crash.
The airplane crashed in the grass adjacent to runway 27 about 150 yards northeast of the terminal building.
The Federal Aviation Agency was expected to be at the scene Thursday to complete an investigation. Meanwhile, Indiana State Police are handling the crash scene until their arrival.
Huntingburg Police Department and Volunteer Fire Department, Dubois County Sheriff's Department and Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene as well.
The runway was closed while the investigation was ongoing but reopened to allow a passenger plane to depart.
