(BEDFORD) - The Juvenile Justice Coalition is intervening on behalf of local children, whose parents are not living up to caring for their children.
Local officials told the Times-Mail too many young boys and girls lack the support of adults willing to steer them away from trouble and along a productive path.
The group is addressing problematic circumstances within the youth community saying many local children are in dire need of mentors.
Jodi Martin, interim chief professional officer of Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence County says the group currently has 16 mentors but is in need of more. She is seeking a grant to recruit and train 30 more.
One of the coalition's key projects is to establish an addiction recovery support group for teens. An organizational meeting for "The Landing" is set for Tuesday, Nov. 1, and the facility is scheduled to open at the corner of Sixth and Q streets in Bedford by January. Jack Voigtschild, a longtime local chaplain and key contributor for decades with the Salvation Army, is heading that project.
The coalition already has generated inspiring results - by launching a billboard and sign campaign to alert youth to the dangers of heroin, meth and other illegal substances. Three of the signs were destroyed by vandals. New sites were determined and more signs will be displayed following the upcoming election.
