(WASHINGTON CO.) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating the death of a Salem man killed while logging in the Jackson-Washington State Forest on Monday afternoon.
44-year-old Thomas Sidwell died at the scene after suffering head trauma from a fallen limb.
Emergency personnel responded to the forest shortly after 12:30 p.m., near the Mail Route, outside of Salem. Sidwell, a contracted logger, was found unresponsive by a fellow employee.
Preliminary investigation indicates that Sidwell was attempting to fell a tree that was entangled with a dead tree. A large limb from the dead tree was dislodged, striking Sidwell, who was wearing a safety helmet.
Assisting agencies at the scene included the Washington County Sheriff's Department, Washington County EMS, and the Washington County Coroner's Office. The incident remains under investigation.
