(BEDFORD) - The City of Bedford has condemned the Goff Refrigeration building at 1018 16th Street after a leaky roof caused damage to the interior and bricks have fallen off the the exterior of the backside of the building.

According to Bedford Plan Director Dan Kirk, the city condemned the building after an inspection by the city's building inspector and fire inspector found the roof was falling in and the bracing was giving way.

The city has ordered the building be torn down at the owner's expense. If they refuse, the city will raze the building and put a lien on the property to recoup the expenses.

The owners of the building do not have the estimated $150,000 to take down the building. Goff Refrigeration has vacated the building and moved to 532 K St., the former site of M&F Vending.

The Times-Mail reports that the building dates back to 1898. Howard Goff founded Goff Refrigeration in 1953. In 1975, Ed Koch purchased the business and in 1977 moved the business to its 16th Street location. In 2000, Steven Clouse purchased the business. He died in 2008 and his children are now owners of the building and business.
